Best Buy vs Amazon: MacBook Air Edition (CNet)

Amazon offers one of the best deals on inflamed MacBook air holidays. But don't count in the California retail giant Fry electronics prior to performing the usual comparison with Best Buy.

Amazon is used a fairly large part on the popular 11.6 inch MacBook Air, offering MC505LL A model now for $959, which lists the Apple for $999 (1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chip, 64 GB flash memory drive and 2 GB of RAM). This was based on a verification of prices, I've done on Saturday morning, Pacific time. This brings me to a cautionary note: the price may change rapidly as the demand for this unit seems high.

Electronic Fry - which stores giant warehouse-size are found mainly in California and Texas - will beat this price though. A Fry that Friday night in Los Angeles, I visited, the model MC505LL A air was on sale for $949.

Not to be outdone, the MacConnection sells the same model for $1, $948. Although online shop shows "order."

Amazon offers also the model MacBook Air 11.6 inches/MC506LL/A (which ups capacity of 128 GB 64 GB flash drive) for $1,148.99, a discount of $50 on the list price.

So far, Best Buy is not offering any special offers on new MacBook air.

(Correction: 13.3 inches of current generation model is available for $1,299 drive 128 GB, 2 GB of memory flash memory with a core 2 Duo 1.86 GHz processor.) It is a few hundred dollars I paid for the model of 13.3 inches configured in the same way before generation processor 1.86 GHz solid-state drive same capacity with the same amount of memory. Ironically, this older model is listed for $1,699 site of Best Buy. Go figure. )

And I will add that PostScript: Fry beats Best Buy high hand (for the effort, not necessarily the result) on the interior decoration. (Amazon can compete because there is no brick and mortar stores.) I have been stores FRY everywhere, California - Palo Alto, Sacramento, San Diego and Los Angeles and start in Phoenix, Arizona, too - and still I find myself contemplating or scratch my head to the curious dioramas that usually occupy a corner of the store (see photo). And decor, but also deals usually get amped up during the holidays.

Updated at 9: 30 p.m. PST: correction for the current MacBook Air 13.3 inch 1.86 GHz processor.

Apple to exploit charts its for future MacBook (CNet)

Apple decided to use processors Sandy Bridge coming her in his range of MacBook, a transition that happen in 2011, squeezing out in at least certain models of the popular notebooks, Nvidia graphics processors sources told CNET.

Most recent processor its, which will be officially announced on 5 January in the Consumer Electronics Show, will find its way in MacBooks to replace the existing models, according to sources familiar with Apple plans industry. Current use of MacBook Nvidia graphics chips with Intel Core series I and core 2 Duo processors. But, because of the features graphics increased Sandy Bridge Apple - at least for now - has determined that it would not continue in graphic processing units (GPU) in some models Nvidia.

The MacBook models with screen sizes 13 inches and below should go to Sandy Bridge only graphics, while the higher end MacBook Pros are supposed to use graphics from Advanced Micro Devices, according to sources. It is not known if Nvidia will be always present in the higher models.

Sandy Bridge is a watershed for Intel because for the first time in a consumer product, the graphics chip is grafted directly on the main processor, boost performance, while essentially providing graphics free of charge service processor. And stage performance may be enough for Apple to rely on graphics its in some lower-end MacBook.

"In the past, if you look at these low range devices products class 13 inches, it is not much room for a discrete GPU." Thus, for the future, if [Apple was] will use Sandy Bridge into a product of entry-level, I think that they would have to rely exclusively on integrated graphics Sandy Bridge, "according to Nathan Brookwood, senior analyst of Insight64."

"I would say... we can expect (approx.) 2 x the performance of [that] last graphics," said Anand Shimpi, CEO of Anandtech website technology is an overview of the graphics performance of Sandy Bridge. "This level of performance, I do not see a need for discrete [autonomous Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices] charts at the end of very small," he said.

Apple already uses Intel MacBook, which can switch between the Nvidia processor and more efficient energy integrated Intel graphics Silicon Graphics card to a certain extent. The MacBook air and original used graphic Intel exclusively. But generally Apple avoided Intel graphics technology in the past because of its performance less responsible for AMD and Nvidia.

Sandy Bridge in the small design of the MacBook popular adoption would be one of the strongest technology Intel since Apple made seminal transition from PowerPC of IBM-Motorola to Intel chips in 2005. And recognition than Intel, while perhaps not the best graphics technology now offers the best value for price-performance for MacBook lower - end.

Other considerations for Apple
One of the key issues underlying revolves around OpenCL, a software framework that can exploit inherent capacity for a GPU to run certain applications much faster than a central standard processing unit or CPU. OpenCL has been touted as enabling "for developers to take advantage of the vast gigaflops of computing power" in graphics processors, according to Apple's Web highlighting the features of the OS X operating system page "Snow Leopard". OpenCL, for example, can be used in Apple's iLife titles like iPhoto for performing analysis and face recognition.

And OpenCL has been somewhat of an asset for the Nvidia, graphic chip provider that supports the technology already in its chips. If Intel is planning to open CL supported natively in its processors and released the alpha drivers and an SDK for open CL, that support, as stated publicly, focuses on the CPU and even at a stage emerging development. However, Intel is working on OpenCL graphics part of Sandy Bridge according to the sources.

Intel has refused to comment directly on Apple plans, but about OpenCL recounting only CNET: "in terms of full support for the product, we continue to assess when and where OpenCL will intercept our various products."

Another factor affecting decisions future processor by Apple is the legal disputes between Intel and Nvidia. In February 2009, continuation of Intel filed against Nvidia to try to ban from Nvidia for stating that he has the right license for future Intel data bus (data channel) technology. If Intel prevails, Nvidia would be unable to sell its chipset for use with Intel processors beyond the generation of core 2 Duo technology. Indeed, excluding Nvidia chipsets for current to I Core processor series and Sandy future bridge chips. In fact, it is one of the reasons that Apple uses old Intel Core 2 Duo processors in its new MacBook air rights 13-inch MacBook Pros. NVIDIA to core 2 Duo bus allows Apple to use the games graphics components high performance Nvidia in the design of the MacBook thin.

Apple could bypass the legal minefields - and complaints provided for some consumers to use old chip technology - the future of Sandy Bridge in MacBook 13 inch and smaller graphics while continuing its strategy of using discrete GPU Nvidia or AMD in upper MacBook pros.

Perhaps equally important, Apple intentions and needs can change quickly. With Apple ranked No. 3 manufacturer of personal computers to United States - and growth - this could simply be assuming intensive negotiations. Here, Nvidia seem to have the most to lose and more profits. Although Nvidia does not provide a breakdown of the percentage of enterprises not with Apple, he says in its form 10-K that his "company GPU is focused on Microsoft Windows PCs and Apple platforms.

AMD is still a wild on the side of the CPU card even if its graphics processors are available on Mac Pros. Brookwood believes that low entry-level MacBook is also future candidates - perhaps more road - "Fusion" of AMD technology that combines Intel compatible processors AMD with its ATI graphics chips, but high performance. "These lower-end MacBook is sitting ducks for processors AMD fusion", he said.

Apple and Nvidia has declined to comment for this story.
